Oktoberfest in the Puget Sound
For the beer nuts this time of year means that the year’s growth of hops are being harvested. The fall season also means Oktoberfest, the infamous Munich, Germany based Harvest/Beer Festival which sparked similar offshoot festivals of varying scales around the world, is approaching. The echos of Oktoberfest seem to be amplified in Washington State where craft breweries find success and beer fanatics gather round waiting in anticipation for the return of seasonal brews and the newest creations from their favorite local breweries using the freshest hops. It’s no secret that German immigrants had a large presence and influence during the early years of our state, even the legendary Olympia Brewing Company was started by a German immigrant Leopold Schmidt, so you can begin to see why the Oktoberfest celebration has become an integrated custom for the Northwest and many other places around the United States.
